As a runner, Certified running coach and a foot doctor i am always asked about barefoot running vs wearing shoes. Barefoot running was great 100 years ago when we were walking on dirt and grass, or even it is fine now when at the beach. But to think you can safely run injury free on pavement is crazy. I am being told time and time again from patients, " dr shippee, i was told to try barefoot running so i run faster and pain free, but now i can't run at all, I am in soo much pain!!"
To all those out there, please listen.....running barefoot or landing on your forefoot WILL result in injury, its only a matter of time. If you must follow the trend, purchase a pair of Newton Running Shoes, they make you feel as if you are landing forefoot, when you are actually landing parallel to the ground, the way we should be running. When running in this manner, we replicate the "shock absorbing" qualities we were built with.
