Multivitamin Intake Enhances Energy Level and Mood
A double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled study published in December 2012 reports that multivitamin intake improves energy levels, mood and sleep. Researchers conducted this study to explore the subjective experience of taking a multivitamin.
Researchers supplemented 182 subjects with a multivitamin or placebo daily for 16 weeks. After 16 weeks, the subjects answered questions regarding their experience, and researchers categorized the responses as positive or negative. One hundred sixteen subjects completed the study.
The investigators determined that subjects in the multivitamin group reported more favorable effects regarding increased energy level and enhanced mood compared to the placebo group. The increase in energy level was particularly significant among the female subjects. Additionally, the data showed a trend for better sleep among the multivitamin group compared to the placebo group.
The study authors stated, “This represents the first documented qualitative investigation of participants' experience of chronic administration of a multivitamin. Results uncovered a range of subjective beneficial effects that are consistent with quantitative data from previously published randomized controlled trials examining the effects of multivitamins and B vitamin complexes on mood and well-being.”
